CLASSIFICATION OF DRUGS

CLASSIFICATION OF DRUGS

medicinal chemistry

THE number of drugs introduced into practice is increasing day by day. Therefore it has become necessary to classify them. The following system classified the drugs into two categories;

1.CHEMICAL CLASSIFICATION :

according to this classification, drugs are grouped according to their chemical structure and properties regardless of their pharmacological action. As per this classification drugs may fall into one or more categories such as alcohols, acids, esters, amides, amines, azo-compounds, phenols, etc. this is the old classification that started several years back and is still followed by some authors/scientists.

2.PHARMACOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION:

according to this classification, drugs are divided depending on their action on an organ. Accordingly, drugs are divided into groups such as narcotics, analgesics, diuretics, general anesthetics, local anesthetics, antidiabetics, anticonvulsants, antihypertensive, etc.
             both the above classification is having some shortcomings in the pharmacological classification groups drugs with common physiological action. For example, the groups of cardiac stimulants include representatives of the heterocyclic series both natural and synthetic and a representative of terpenes and cardiac glycosides.
        The chemical classification has a similar shortcoming. Here substances similar in structure have absolutely different physiological actions
