- Vegetable Oils: Such as olive oil, shea butter, and cocoa butter, which provide hydration and nourishment.
Pigments and Colorants: Pigments are responsible for the color of the lipstick. These can be either natural or synthetic:
- Organic Pigments: Such as carmine (from cochineal insects) or lake dyes (synthetic organic colors).
- Inorganic Pigments: Like iron oxides, titanium dioxide, or mica, which provide vibrant colors and shimmer effects.
- Dyes and Lakes: Water- and oil-soluble colors are used for specific shades.
Emollients: Emollients soften and hydrate the lips. They also help to blend pigments with waxes and oils for an even consistency. Common emollients include:
- Lanolin: A waxy substance derived from sheep's wool that provides moisture.
- Butters (Shea, Cocoa): These provide hydration and smooth application.

Preservatives and Antioxidants: These ingredients are necessary to extend the shelf life of the lipstick and prevent rancidity:

- Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA) and Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT): Common preservatives used to prevent oxidation of oils.
Example Formula for Lipstick
Here's a basic formula for lipstick that combines these ingredients:
Wax Blend (20-25%):
- Beeswax: 10%
- Carnauba Wax: 5%
- Candelilla Wax: 5%
Oils (50-60%):
- Castor Oil: 30%
- Jojoba Oil: 10%
- Shea Butter: 10%
- Mineral Oil: 10%
Pigments and Colorants (10-15%):
- Iron Oxide Red: 5%
- Titanium Dioxide: 3%
- Mica Powder: 2%
Emollients (5-10%):

Process:
- Melt the waxes in a double boiler.
- Add oils and mix thoroughly.

- Add emollients and preservatives.
- Pour the mixture into lipstick molds and allow it to cool and set.
This formula ensures a smooth, hydrating, and pigmented lipstick with a long-lasting effect. Adjustments can be made depending on desired texture, finish (matte, satin, glossy), or additional properties (e.g., SPF protection).
