Chemical Structure of Testosterone

Testosterone is a steroid hormone, and its structure is based on a sterane backbone. The chemical formula for testosterone is C₁₉H₂₈O₂. The structure consists of:

  • Four interconnected carbon rings (three six-membered and one five-membered) known as the steroid nucleus.
  • An alcohol (hydroxyl) group at the 17th carbon (C-17 position) of the D-ring.
  • keto (carbonyl) group at the 3rd carbon (C-3 position) of the A-ring.
  • A double bond between carbon atoms 4 and 5 (C-4 and C-5).
